Mel Brooks was born on June 28, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. After getting his start in the "Borscht Belt" clubs of the Catskills, he became a television writer and worked with Sid Caesar on Your Show of Shows. Brooks' directorial debut was the outrageous musical The Producers, which won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, Brooks has helmed comedy classics including Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. The Producers went to Broadway in 2001 and became an enormous hit, winning a record number of Tony's.
